Last Tuesday, Congress and the President reached a budget deal for FY16 and FY17 that provide relief from the sequester; now, the Appropriations Subcommittees are working on funding for individual programs, including HUD programs.  The timeline for advocacy is tight - we have about 1 week to guarantee programs vital to Rhode Island are adequately funded.

A letter from RICH and the Housing Network was delivered to our Congressional delegation on Monday with specific funding asks for the programs we have prioritized: HOME, the Housing Choice Voucher Program, the National Housing Trust Fund, and McKinney-Vento Emergency Homeless Assistance Grants.

As a follow-up to this letter, we are asking you to make 3 calls - to both of our Senators and to your Congressman - to say "thank you for your leadership on lifting the sequester caps - please guarantee adequate funding for HUD programs is in the final FY2016 budget."  The deadline for this is next Tuesday, November 17th.  Here are the numbers you need:

Senator Reed's office: 202-224-4642
Senator Whitehouse's office: 202-224-2921
Congressman Cicilline's office: 202-225-4911 OR Congressman Langevin's office: 202-225-2735

Laundry For 25 People A Day – Yikes!

If you had to do bed linens and towels for 25 people every day how would you get it done?  This is a question that faces the staff of McKinney Cooperative Shelter every day 365 days of the year.  It’s like running a hotel.  A hotel handles this ton of laundry with commercial washing machines but McKinney doesn’t have that luxury.  Each machine cost $750 and that is way over its budget.  If you would like to help the shelter and the men and women it serves you can make a donation toward the purchase of two commercial washing machines.  Send a check to McKinney Cooperative Shelter, 15 Meeting St., Newport, RI 02840.  In the memo area write “Laundry Fund”.  Your donation is 100% tax deductible.  If you’d like to know more about McKinney Cooperative Shelter click here
